The Chamber of the Tequila Industry (CNIT) celebrated the 45th edition of Tequila Day 2026 at a ceremony presided over by Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón. The event highlighted the contribution of the agave-based industry to the country's economic development and the importance of maintaining a collaborative agenda to strengthen its competitiveness and presence in international markets.
Also in attendance were Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro; Guadalajara Mayor Verónica Delgadillo García; and Michoacán's Secretary of Communications and Public Works, Rogelio Zarazúa Sánchez, as well as members of Congress, representatives of the Agave-Tequila production chain, and other authorities from various levels of government.
The agave-based industry has established Tequila as one of Mexico's most iconic products, recognized both nationally and internationally. In 2025, production reached 583.5 million liters, while exports totaled 405.9 million liters, with a commercial presence in more than 120 countries. As of September 2026, exports had reached 325.2 million liters, representing a 2.2% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
This performance underscores the need to continue strengthening the conditions for the industry's development and market diversification. Roberto Ciprés Cruces, President of the CNIT, noted that Tequila's international positioning is the result of decades of investment, innovation, and joint efforts among stakeholders throughout the production chain, as well as ongoing collaboration with government authorities.
“The future of Tequila lies not only in defending the markets we have already conquered, but also in conquering the markets that still await us,” he stated.
In this regard, Secretary Marcelo Ebrard noted that Tequila represents and symbolizes everything Mexico does as a country. “If we do not defend it, how can we defend everything else we produce?” he asked.
He added that “since the launch of the ‘Hecho en México’ (Made in Mexico) initiative, the President has instructed us to defend Tequila,” and announced that a modernized agreement with India is expected to be reached in 2027. “We cannot have a healthy trade relationship with a 150% tariff... We already have the terms of reference, and the Minister of Commerce has committed to reducing that tariff to levels below those applied by the United States.”
Ciprés Cruces acknowledged the agenda promoted by the Ministry of Economy to strengthen the international presence of Mexican products, particularly the defense of Tequila under the USMCA (T-MEC), the protection of its Appellation of Origin, the strengthening of trade relations with Europe, and the development opportunities available in other markets.
Finally, the CNIT recognized the Government of Jalisco's willingness to maintain an ongoing dialogue with the agave-based industry, address challenges throughout the production chain, and develop joint solutions to support its growth.
The Chamber also reaffirmed its commitment to continuing coordinated efforts with government authorities and industry stakeholders to strengthen competitiveness, protect Tequila's reputation, and expand development opportunities for an industry that represents Mexico before the world.
