The Chamber of the Tequila Industry (CNIT) celebrates the decision of the Congress of the Union to establish July 24 as National Tequila Day, an emblematic date that recognizes Mexico’s most representative beverage as a symbol of identity, cultural heritage, and a pillar of national economic development. This commemoration represents a historic step to consolidate the global recognition of Tequila.
The approval of the declaration of National Tequila Day constitutes a historic milestone for the tequila agroindustry and consolidates the prestige of Tequila as a premium distilled spirit with international recognition, whose value is sustained by its authenticity, quality, tradition, and innovation.
Ana Cristina Villalpando Fonseca, General Director of the National Chamber of the Tequila Industry, stated: “The recognition of July 24 as National Tequila Day reaffirms the cultural, economic, and social relevance of an agroindustry that projects the greatness of Mexico to the world. This achievement strengthens its positioning as a premium distilled spirit that promotes a culture of responsible consumption based on quality and appreciation of its origin.”
More than a beverage, Tequila is an emblem of Mexican culture and a strategic asset of the country’s economic diplomacy. Its presence in international markets contributes to strengthening the Mexico brand and the positioning of its products of origin.
The Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila, inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, reaffirms the historical and cultural relevance of this beverage at a global level.
The tequila industry represents one of the most dynamic and competitive sectors of the national economy, generating regional development, employment, and added value throughout its productive chain, which has made it an economic driver of the region.
The tequila industry in Mexico:
• Produces 598 million liters annually in Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas, the five states that have the Denomination of Origin.
• Generates more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs with an economic impact in more than 300 municipalities across the country.
• One out of every three distilled spirits consumed in Mexico is Tequila.
• More than 400 million liters are exported to more than 120 countries.
Around 84% of exports are destined for the United States. The commemoration of National Tequila Day reaffirms the industry’s commitment to promoting a culture of appreciation based on quality, moderation, and responsibility.
Tequila is positioned today as a premium distilled spirit, valued for its origin, traceability, and sensory diversity, attributes that respond to global trends of conscious consumption.
The National Chamber of the Tequila Industry expresses its deep gratitude to the legislators who promoted this initiative, whose support strengthens the protection of national heritage and contributes to the economic and cultural development of the country.
Their commitment reflects the importance of Tequila as a symbol of identity and as a strategic agroindustry for Mexico.
Celebrations throughout the country
Within the framework of National Tequila Day, the Tequila Industry will carry out activities of knowledge, education, promotion, and positioning of the category, in collaboration with authorities, the tourism sector, and the gastronomic industry.
These initiatives will allow society to get closer to the history, the production process, and the cultural richness of the national beverage par excellence.
