CNIT warns against claims lacking technical basis regarding 100% agave Tequila

• Claims are being made against several brands, based on studies provided by non-accredited laboratories

The Chamber of the Tequila Industry (CNIT) categorically rejects the claims that have recently circulated, and which seek to discredit the authenticity of 100% agave Tequila and the reputation of formal companies within the sector. These assertions are based on “studies” that lack scientific, technical, or legal validity.

The disseminated documents —primarily through social media, non-specialized digital spaces, media outlets, and private communications lacking technical formality— originate from laboratories without official accreditation to evaluate Tequila. Although these may be recognized laboratories, accreditation is an indispensable condition to guarantee technical competence, validated methods, and metrological traceability. Without accreditation, any result lacks reliability, is unverifiable, and is without legal recognition. The techniques employed are also not part of the official methods of NOM-006, nor are they designed to analyze spirits; thus, they cannot be used to evaluate the authenticity of Tequila. Added to this is the non-existence of a chain of custody, which completely invalidates any conclusion derived from these samples.

In this context, it is necessary to identify the actors who have promoted these accusations and specify their lack of representativeness within the sector. In particular, neither Mr. Remberto Galván Cabrera, who has disseminated these accusations, nor the company Agaveros 100 Por Ciento de Origen Mexicano, S. de R.L. de C.V., represents any agave association, nor do they have legitimacy within the productive chain. Their participation in the sector is marginal, they lack guild support, and their statements do not reflect the stance of producers or recognized organizations. Furthermore, other actors with interests in doing business with conformity assessment are identified and seek to do so by discrediting the current model.

We reiterate that Tequila is a protected Designation of Origin, whose authenticity can only be determined by the Government of Mexico through NOM-006, the Ministry of Economy, and the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), the sole officially accredited entity for product certification.

The Tequila agro-industry is a global benchmark for legality, traceability, and regulatory compliance. Attempts at discrediting based on studies lacking official recognition unfairly affect formal companies, Mexican cultural heritage, and thousands of families whose livelihood depends on this productive chain. The CNIT will always defend the integrity of Tequila with scientific evidence and full adherence to current regulations.

For these reasons, the CNIT urges media outlets, consumers, and sector actors to verify the accuracy of the information, consult official sources, and avoid reproducing unsubstantiated claims. The Chamber maintains open doors to provide verifiable data, regulatory methodology, and accredited technical evidence. We reiterate that the tests disseminated do not represent technical evidence, do not meet scientific standards, and have no legal value for questioning the authenticity of 100% agave Tequila.
